Australia beats American Samoa 31 – 0
Australia set a World Record for the largest victory in international football match on April 11, 2001, when they trashed the national football team of American Samoa 31-0 in a qualifying match for the 2002 FIFA World cup match.
Archie Thompson 13 goal scorer
The match was played at the International Sports Stadium in Coffs Harbor. Australia’s Archie Thompson, Thompson, who plies his trade for Marconi Stallions in the Australia National League, broke the record for most goals ever scored by an individual player in an international match by scoring 13 goals in the match which helped the ‘Socceroos’ create a new world record. His team mate David Zdrilic also scored 8 goals to be the second highest number of goals in any international match.
Frank Farina’s side, amazingly, took eight minutes before they scored their first, when Con Boutsianis cross-cum-shot crept in.
Thompson scored his first three minutes later and from then on the shots and goals rained in on poor Samoan ‘keeper Nicky Salapu.
